ipfloI have a question, it is not about a castle (i apologize if some one is offendend by this ),but about a manor house from the 17th century, which is altered around 1800, it lies near Basingstoke and it is called Hackwood House. It once belonged to the dukes of Bolton and now it seems it belongs the viscounts camrose. I would like to find some pictures of the house, I self already searched on the internet, but the only thing i could find was a vague aerial photo on www.multimap.com. already very much thx for the answer
duncanTaken out of context from this earlier discussion, http://www.castlesontheweb.com/quest/Forum7/HTML/000520.html

"Our purpose is to generate interest and facilitate the education of those who cannot
properly distinguish a true castle from a piece of disneyland 'kitsch', to do this they
have to visit us, and so we have a wide subject range but each with links to our core
topic. That said, modern mansions without the history do not warrant mention here,
since then there is no link with earlier times."

Ipflo, does the site or area near by have a connection with the past as in a castle of one type or another?
I'm not sure but i think it does.

ipfloOfcourse you have right on that.
(anyway is there a site like www.castlesontheweb.com for mansions/ 'castles' after ~1600/ palaces ?)

To get back at hackwood house, the 17th century house replaced an older hunting lodge, but i am not sure of which century it dates, but certainly before ~1620. So it has certainly a connection to earlier times, but 'unfortunately' not as a 'real' castle, but more as a medieval or renaissance manor house. so then this topic still doesn't really belong in this forum ;(

Gordonipflo, try here for Country Houses, it's the only site I've come across which lists them and lists source material. http://www.r-alston.dircon.co.uk/country_house_database.htm
